History

The club was formed by a group of local people in 1893, and held its first gala at the public baths in Davenport Street in October of that year.(The club moved to the Leisure Centre, Priory Lane in 1986). A trophy, presented by Mr Fred Hill, Mayor of Macclesfield 1893 to 1896, is still competed for to the present day.

about 1932Records aren't clear as to who the leader of the group was, but it would appear that Alderman W Frost was one of the main committee leaders. However, one thing is very clear, the club has produced some of the country's finest swimmers, and many are the honours that these swimmers have brought to the town, including:

  • Fred Bramhall - Macclesfield's own National Champion of England in1930
  • Colin Holloway - Cheshire County Champion
  • Betty Blackburn - Northern Counties Backstroke Champion for 9 years
  • Valerie Brown - International trialist for Backstroke and Northern Counties record holder
  • Derek Higgins - 3 times Northern Midland Breastroke Champion
  • Brenda Sherratt - 1st person to swim Loch Ness in 1966
  • Steven Mellor - Represented England in the 1992 Olympics
  • Rachel Linney - Carried the Commonwealth Games 2002 Baton in Macclesfield

The club was very active in the water polo field before the 2nd world war, and was a member of the North Midlands Association. Members also took part in Squadron racing and entered for the Cheshire Knock-Out competition.

In 1972, the outside competition of the group was taken on by a breakaway section, now the Satellite Swimming Club, and M.A.S.C. became the premier teaching club of the town. Amongst past officials, there are such names as Rex Hilditch, Arthur Kennedy, and the Risely Family. W Hackney, Bath Superintendent, also U Booth, Mrs J McKimmie, both bath managers and Mr J Leach all have given valuable time and contributed to the successful running of the club. In recent years Jim Gidman held a number of positions in the club, along with Mr W Brown, and notably Mr David Carruthers held the office of President and Treasurer from 1968 until his untimely death in 1990. His niece, Christine Moore, has held the position of Club Secretary from 1969, until this present day.

On the 31st may 1961, M.A.S.C. contributed to the 700th Anniversary of the granting of the 1st charter to the Borough of Macclesfield, by staging an anniversary swimming Gala.

Many new ideas have been introduced over the years, one of the most popular being the Distance Award Scheme ('Badge Night'). This was started in 1976, when members have a night to swim as far as possible, in order to obtain badges from 25 metres (1 length) to 3000 metres (120 lengths). This often incorporates a 'sponsored swim', and in the past the club has donated money to M.A.S.T, New Heart-New Start, Guide Dogs for the Blind, Macclesfield's Riding for the Disabled and Children in Need, to name a few.
